Nicholas P. Caiafa

Nick combines hands-on mechanical engineering experience with patent law to help clients design, protect, and evaluate technology. His practice includes patent preparation and prosecution, patent portfolio development, patentability and freedom-to-operate analysis, patent strategy, and technology evaluation. He has managed substantial domestic and international patent portfolios, coordinating prosecution strategy with clients and foreign counsel across multiple jurisdictions. Nick works with inventors, startups, manufacturers, and technology-driven organizations at various stages of product development and commercialization.

Nick's engineering background provides practical context for his patent practice. Before becoming a patent attorney, he worked as a Design Engineer at Parker Hannifin in research and development. As the primary engineer on the development of a piezoelectric cutting device for surgical and non-surgical applications, he designed, fabricated, and tested functional prototypes and conducted proof-of-concept demonstrations. He later worked on balance-of-plant development for fuel-cell applications, including the design and testing of desulfurization filtration and blower configurations.

That combination of engineering and patent experience allows Nick to evaluate technology from both technical and legal perspectives and to understand how product development, manufacturing considerations, and patent strategy can affect one another.
